I live within city limits, so I'd like to find a relatively quiet breed, but one that will produce a reasonable quantity of eggs.

Is there a breed that is disease resistant, quiet, a good producer, and easy to maintain?

saanen - I have over an acre of land. My closest (only) neighbor is across the street. I wanted quiet birds because I'm considerate, not because I was worried about getting in trouble.

I had auracanas (blue eggs), silkies (white eggs) and white crested black polish hens. All are good layers and they are quite beautiful to look at. The silkies are great sitters. They'll sit on anybody's eggs! They were all pets and I enjoyed the eggs. As chickens get older (like humans) they will produce less, especially in the winter when there is less light outdoors. Then, it is wise to add artificial lighting in the coop. If you live within city limits, a rooster can be a bad thing. They'll start crowing at about 4 am in the morning in the summer...so NO roosters! The "Poultry Information Exchange" is a great website for newbies.

I had Rhode Island reds. No rooster (prohibited in city limits). If you have nosy and annoying neighbors, they'll call the Health Dept. on you to ensure all is being done to minimize disease, so build the henhouse atleast 18" from the ground, prevent rats and weasels from getting into the cage, and keep water fresh and ice free.

Good luck -- chickens are way too fun for folks (I had mine about 4 years) but be prepared for odd things. They liked to dive bomb my elderly cat, they constantly aimed for the pool, the liked to roost on the deck railing, and our border collie learned to herd by chasing them back into their pen. All the folly meant we'd find eggs under various bushes and trees in the yard. Gosh, those were the days!

Buff Orphingtons are a hardy back yard farm type of chicken. I have grown them for several years and they are a nice calm chicken, but I hand fed mine since they were tiny chicks. I you want them to be quiet...don't get a rooster!

The best breed is the one the zoning official says is. You are really pushing your neighbors.
