Freedom of speech is no longer a reality, it's now only a dream, simply because some people from a different culture take offence to how words are put to them. This is what happens when you move to a country and don't understand the ways of the people and their language.
I think expressing your views on these subjects should be respected, no matter what your view (of course, inciting disorder is wrong), but a normal discussion on the subject shouldn't brand anyone racist, but you'll always get people who won't like it.
It's all wrong.

Most of the people at work are irreverent or atheist or agnostic. Even my husband admitted the other day that he "doesn't know what to believe in" anymore. Everything was a lot clearer when he was young. I can't say for myself I'm as devout as I once was, and I was very strongly religious and spiritual, I find these days, I'm much more caustic rather than sarcastic, so much to the point that when I realize I've just said something horribly irreverent, I catch myself and realize that in another time and another place, I would not have said such a thing.

Why is it nearly impossible to discuss without being branded a racist? Because the subject touches so many areas of sensitivity and it's hard to debate in a detached manner.
Just a few such areas spanned by 'immigration and the multicultural society' : religion (and hence sexuality), education, jobs, politics, national economy, international relations and human rights. I'm sure you can add more!
Even when the subject is approached in a cool and rational manner, it's easy to offend people who may then find the quickest way to shut down the topic is to shout 'racist'.

A lot of people seem to attack the person asking the question without even thinking through the question in the first instance. You are not being racist but the impulsive judgemental types are to quick to comment. They need to slow down and think first.

Because it is an unthinking reaction of the indoctrinated ones. You know, the ones who can't think for themselves, but feel safe echoing what the BBC or their lecturers tell them. ( foot soldiers of the lefty PC police).
So, take their childish name calling as a compliment, and make your case regardless, the silent majority will be out here taking notice.

Yes. If you seek to treat people differently on the grounds of their ethnic origin, that is racism. If you wish to live in a culture that excludes those of a different race from you, that is racism.
You can't hold the views without carrying the label.
I didn't say that you were wrong to seek to discuss such ideas, but if one holds racist views, one is a racist.

Yes because certain people overreact, & the government either loves terrorists or is too scared to do anything to stop immigration & stop our country being taken over.

Because you're white and we're all racist (NOT).
Same reason you can't talk about why we're giving equal treatement to less-abled folk who need help and it costs thousands to get into work, or why we spend thousands on breasts implants for WAG wannabes with weight issues, or why we can't talk about women being rubbish at sport. By talking sense you make other people feel inadaquate because they are hard-of-thinking

We live in a country with rights of free speech - don't we? (...or has that right been quietly chucked in the bin?).
