Why is a wrestling/boxing ring called a "ring" if it isn't round and is a square?

Many years ago boxing rings used to be circular but over time they've become square. If you read the "Collins English Dictionary" they define a boxing ring as "A square apron or raised platform marked off by ropes in which contestants box or wrestle"
