This is not specific to the pharma industry.

The key reason has to do with "less pay for less demonstrated value". As a new worker you have not done this and thus you get paid less. As you demonstrate value, they will demonstrate more pay. That said, it is important to understand early what your management values so that you can know what you need to focus on demonstrating.

I don't know if this is specific to pharma companies. Most companies, large and small, pay according to experience. If you are new and inexperienced they will need to train you, and you will have a lot to learn. As you get more proficient, you will be more valuable in the job marketplace.
