ive seen plenty of references to "real" americans.....as if there are americans who somehow disqualify their citizenship if their beliefs are not in line with those flag waving, bible thumping war mongers on the right.

The inherent ignorance of those that adhere to extreme right wing views never ceases to amaze me. They can never get it through their thick skulls that a person can be as patriotic as they are and hold views that are 180 degrees opposite. Then again, many ultra-liberals live in a fantasy world. I fit somewhere in the middle. I'm a flag waver, I love our country but not neccessarily what our government does. I'm a fiscal conservative yet believe in individual freedom as long as it harms no one but yourself. I don't believe the government has any business legislating how a person lives their life and especially has no business legislating morals.

Margaret Chase Smith:
Moral cowardice that keeps us from speaking our minds is as dangerous to this country as irresponsible talk. The right way is not always the popular and easy way. Standing for right when it is unpopular is a true test of moral character.

Mark Twain:
The government is merely a servant -- merely a temporary servant; it cannot be its prerogative to determine what is right and what is wrong, and decide who is a patriot and who isn't. Its function is to obey orders, not originate them.

Ralph Waldo Emerson:
When a whole nation is roaring Patriotism at the top of its voice, I am fain to explore the cleanness of its hands and the purity of its heart.

Theodore Roosevelt:
To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. (1918)

Well, generally speaking the tree hugging, dope smoking, non-haircut getting, free handout takers from the left don't get it. Although I am not certain about this, I think that the term "real" American refers to someone with guts and determination (albeit somewhat blind at times). This can rarely be used to describe the left.

President Bush said at the Democrat(ic) meeting that opposing him on the war doesn't mean"you don't share the same sense of patriotism I do"..I think some of his blind followers, seem to have missed this train(of thought)

I guess war mongers consider only those who agree with them as "real Americans", whatever that means.

There are no "real Americans". Every citizen is an American. The only true native Americans are Indians. Those people that want everyone to think like them are called AZZHOLES. They are not even considered human!

A real American is someone who thinks that America is a source of good in the world. Not that we're perfect, but that our freedoms are not only a blessing, but we have a responsibility to spread that freedom.

Unfortunately, too many liberals think that America is a source of evil, a source of oppression, a source of destruction to the world.
