How about let him listen to whatever music he wants.

Does your brother:

a) torture small animals?
b) carry a gun?
c) curse out his grandmother?
d) skip school because a song he likes tells him to?

Unless he does anything like the above, why does it matter what your brother listens to? If he likes punk and rap, that means he probably doesn't think he's black and therefore isn't suffering from any kind of identity crisis. As long as these songs aren't encouraging him to do harmful acts to himself or other people, then I think you should quit looking at this as a problem. Chances are your taste in music is equally fake or annoying to other people, so you really have no right to suppose that what you listen to is more appropriate than what he listens to. If he plays it too loud, ask him to turn it down. If your worried he's trying to be something he's not, let him work that out. It sounds like he's young and in a phase of self-discovery. If you really want him to listen to the music you like, maybe you should just play him some of it and let him decide if it's any good rather than making him feel disrespected for enjoying his own music. Maybe if you made a deal to listen to one song he likes for every song you like, you'll both discover new music and you'll actually bond as brothers.

Well, I think it all depends. Is he obsessed with the music or the image? I LOVED heavy metal when I was a teenager, but I turned out ok. If anyone tried to convice me it sucked I would've just turned on them.

If it's the music he's obsessed with, subltely introduce some new genre of music to him. Try to get him to listen to other things as well. But you'll have to make the first step & show a *little* bit of interest in what he's listening to.

If it's the "image" he's obsessed with, I'm not sure what you could do ... it's probably just a phase. My best friend growing up went through a "Satanic Music" phase that I just hated, but she turned out okay too. Sometimes it's just the way an insecure person trys to fit in & find a place they are accepted.

Good luck!

Just let him be. Often times a genre appeals to a young person for its 'rebellion appeal'. If you tell him you hate it, he'll just love it more. Go buy him Outkast's 'Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik'. Their music is sarcastic but doesn't promote drug use or gangsta life style. If you read the lyrics, you'll see that it actually puts it down, while explaining it's roots. Who knows....you might like it too. I like it, even though "I'm way too old for that" Check out the links.

Just let him enjoy his music. There really isn't anything to do. He likes what he likes, that's what makes everyone an individual. =)
