I'm in high school, don't worry it's not ALL like that! yes there are cliques and groups but it's not all like the types you see in movies. For example ppl tend to hand with certain clique's of friends, I dont really see any goths at my school, however there are those wanna bee's that everybody hates. I guess it really all comes down to which part of the states your going to. I'm in Texas so it might be alittle different from where your going.
But hey don't worry about it man! just make friends, good luck, have fun and welcome to the states!
P.S. Like I said before it really depends on were you move to. Hopefully though you won't end up in some ghetto school like the ones in Detroit, Chicago, L.A. or something since those can get kinda..violent with all the gang bangers. but don't worry I'm sure that wont happen. Good luck!

To begin with, a word of warning. I graduated from high school in the States a little more than 30 years ago, so my first-hand experience isn't as fresh as that of other responders is likely to be. On the other side of the ledger, I'm the father of a recent high school graduate & like to think that I'm not completely isolated in my own Baby Boomer demographic.
My general comment on cliques is that it's human nature. The Bible and other myths recognize this, going back to the stories of Cain & Abel, or the factionalism among the Greek leaders fighting the Trojan War. Your parents or older friends no doubt face the same sorts of cliques in their offices, shops and factories. And I'll bet there are different, competing groups at the school in your home country.
I think that the nature and destructiveness of high school cliques appear so strong in Hollywood movies and teevee shows for two reasons:
--In adolescence, everything is more intense than middle age. (As I know from bitter experience.) The hormones associated with your final growth spurt make the good parts of life seem better and the bad, much worse. Also, you're experiencing many of the events of adulthood--love, demanding intellectual work, etc.--for the first time and in a way likely to mark you for life. Some 30 years ago, an American author wrote a book analyzing how the high school lives of leading politicians prefigured their adult careers; sadly, in my dotage I can't remember the details.
--There's also the Hollywood hype factor. The American mass entertainment industry does not paint with a subtle palette. Exaggeration is the norm, if only because it translates better onto the screen and makes for more vivid and marketable stories. E.g. the movie "Mean Girls" works a lot better with the model-like Lindsay Lohan and with the popular clique of girls shown as having the morals of a den of vipers.
I can't promise that all will be sweetness and light at your American high school--no more than it would be in China or England or Brazil. Your biggest frustration will be that when we Americans behave badly, it is culturally different than what you would see among obnoxious Russians or Kenyans. I spent a year of university in France and realized that the French were no worse behaved than we Americans, but just expressed their individual obnoxiousness--as well as niceness--in a different way dicated by their culture.
Take the bad with the good, realize that in Americans like other people there's more good than bad, and have a great time!

The movies are a bit over the top. It is true that there are cliques in every school I think, but most people are very accepting. Don't worry, I think you will enjoy yourself here and make l;ots of freinds.

In my high school, there were cliques. For example: popular people that included jocks, cheerlearders and/or beautiful fashion people.
Then you go the band nerds
Then you go the average people who dressed average and hung out with gay guys.
Then you got the alternative/gothic peopl.
Then you got the loners.
It all depends on what school you go to also.

where are you from, im from UK, and it sounds like you are too from the way you type, nd cool, id luv to go to america, nd school wd b really cool, i think that there are social divisions in their schools like there are emo, chav, geek, sluts, here. and its probably not as bad at TV, and if it is, you will probably be pretty popular for not being the same as all the rest becasue you are from outside the US, but not an illegal immigrant at the same time

I won't lie- there are cliques and depending on where you live they are worse. Just be yourself and you'll find a group that likes you. Just don't be anyone you aren't! Good Luck!!
