The simple answer is the industrial revolution. Guys like Isambard Kingdom Brunel and the pioneers of steam engines, combined with the massive mineral wealth of the country and its colonies allowed Britain to build a huge merchant fleet and the most powerful navy in the world. Sigh...the good old days

Massive industrial capability, largest and most powerful navy in the world, large Empire which contained modern industrial countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa. The Empire meant that in a time of war there was also a ready supply of men from the aforementioned countries, as well as India, most of Africa and large swathes of Asia.
The massive Empire also meant that the navy was always very near large supplies of fuel and food for both ship and crew.

The same reason they were before. Coal and iron, harbors, they had money for weapons and such, and they had the natural resources. :] They pretty much had everything to build a very good army. That's why Britain was so powerful during WW1

Because of its enormous industrial output. Manufacturing, Steel production,Engineering, shipbuilding, cotton etc We had hardly any competition in those days. Today of course we are unfortunately in decline because other countries can provide very cheap labour keeping costs down.
