I know that it's an Islamic country so women dress modestly, but I'm a little confused about what to wear when I go swimming in the hotel as well as at the beach. Is a normal swim suit ok or do I need to wear something over it? Someone said I should wear a baggy T shirt on top! How can I swim with that on?! Answers from people who live in Dubai or those that have been there would be appreciated

At beaches and pools belonging to hotels you can wear anything beside your birthday suit.

If you want to have peace, avoid going public beaches while you go by yourself. There it is a good possibility, that you have men staring at you or take pictures of you with their mobiles. Police tries to keep that under control, but it still happens and you would not feel comfortable.

Last summer it happened, that there where many men at the beach and some one thought that an accident occured and called the police and ambulance. When they arrived, they just found out that some Russians were sunbathing in string tangas and men were looking at them. (Not the UAE Nationals!) Strange - but true.

In Dubai you can wear almost everything as long as it's not the months of Ramadan. But - if you are respecting the Islamic Culture you are thankfull for them being that open to Westerners and dress modestly. Jeans + TShirt, Skirt and Shirt or blouse. Would not be appreciated to go shopping or for dinner wearing shorts.

In the Bastakia section you'll discover the old Dubai but the most gorgeous locations that Dubai provides may be the Burj Khalifa, the world's highest creating and shopping centers that can come complete with mammoth aquariums and indoor skiing slopes. The Burj Al-Arab is the place you want to stay. This lodge may be the world's highest resort with 321 m high and is situated on its own synthetic island on the Dubai coastline. Made to resemble a billowing dhow cruise, the exterior of the Burj Al-Arab is illuminated up with a choreographed shaded light show at night. Decadent in every way possible, it is one of the very costly accommodations on the planet but is certainly worth it.

Lived in Dubai for many years, hotel swimming pools not a problem you can wear bikinis if you wish but if you are on the public beach parks then perhaps something a little less revealing would be good unless you want all the migrant workers staring at you.

I think that skirts tend to either look kind of cheap or trashy if they are tight and short, or they may be just the run of the mill jean skirts that are not necessarily sexy.
