I have been scanning Baby Names for the last couple of days. And I've seen posters get nasty about the names and the spellings, like these people were naming them. They are asking for opinions, not a death sentence. And for those who think that names are all about ENGLISH spelling, not everybody on here is f/ the US. Think about that when judging other people's spellings and pronounciations!!! Then maybe get a life!!!!

In the situation of my friend everyone in her family named at least one of their children John or had the middle name John, she decided to be unique and give her son the middle name Zane. It's not usual, but it's fitting to her family and I see nothing wrong w/ that. FYI his first name is Talon!!!! Not many of those either!!! lol

Ya I know what you are talking about. Another thing to taking in to consideration is that certain families may spell a name a certain way. There is also the people on her that snap on you for even asking others for an opinion. I don't get it. People get so rude on here.

The bottom line is that a bad name can cripple a child for life. Research has shown that job interviewers and teachers tend to respond negatively to some names that are seen, rightly or wrongly, as being "lower-class". So when we see an innocent baby being subjected to a name that will hinder any hopes and dreams you have for the child, we get upset. In France, Germany, and many other European nations, parents must pick names from a pre-approved book, which heads off a lot of problem names and bad spellings.

It gets frustrating when someone comes on looking for "opinions" on a name when what they're really looking for is for people to say, "Great name! Love it!"

If someone says, "What do you think of the name 'Daytona'" or the spelling "Alyxandier," I'm going to give my honest opinion. There's a difference between being creative and simply switching a few letters in a name to make it look different. That's not creative--that's moving vowels for the sake of being different, and it's going to cause huge pains to the child as it grows up. And no, I'm not talking about alternate spelling that you would see in another country; I'm talking about people thinking they're doing their child a great service by giving them a "unique" name, when all they're doing is making them look stupid.

I don't get nasty about it, but there are things parents need to think about before they give their child an unusual name or spelling. Not only should they consider their child's ability to spell the name, but people's ability to pronounce/figure out the name. It is not fun going through life hearing your name mispronounced. In addition, that name is going to be at the top of a resume some day. People may make judgements based on that name before they even see them. It could keep the person from even getting an interview. Fair? No, but that is life.

What is nasty about stating an OPINION that "Heaven" would be a horrible name for a child? That if you name a child a certain name that they will probably be subject to harassment?

If you get upset about people's OPINIONS, don't read the posts. These people ask and others answer.

Hey Girl! You are absolutely right! Thank you for pointing this out.
That annoys me too, I mean they're simply asking our opinions and get the ''third degree'' for it. You are also correct in saying, not everyone on here is from the US and the spellings might be some what different. I think people are sometimes looking for an opportunity be nasty. Honestly!
I agree with you 100%!

I don't think people should get nasty about it either, but sometimes you just have to wonder about the names. I guess you're right about the English/ US thing though. It's okay to pick a unique name, just don't go over board I guess. God bless.

The funniest thing is that I know several people who changed their names from something ethnic or a little different because they were tired of mispronunciations. They took very simple WASP names. Yet people continue to mispronounce, misspell, and even mix up the order of their names. There is no perfect answer.

I figure they can name their child what they want they just need to think first..
1- what can that name be changed into in terms of a nick name and is that a nick name they want their child to have.
2- will the child be able to pronounce and spell their own name when the time comes.

It better to choose a spelling for a name that people can pronounce. I knew a girl in high school named Aoife (EEE-fah). It's an old Irish spelling and no one could ever say it. It caused her some unnecessary anxiety.
