Windows XP Proffessional does comes with a firewall. I heard that Windows XP Home also comes with a firewall, but disabled by default. However Windows firewall is no good. You should have a third party firewall.
You can try some of the free firewall. Jetico, Comodo, Tiny firewall, Sygate. I'm using sygate, but i would recommened Jetico or Comodo coz i recently read that both of them scored good rank under different testing conditions and stood far better than those paid commercial firewalls.

Windows XP does come with a firewall. You can start it by going to Start Menu > Control Panel > Security Center > Firewall > On. The job of a firewall is to monitor the traffic from your computer to the Internet. Ideally, a firewall is suppose to monitor both incoming and outgoing traffic from your computer. Windows XP's firewall is unidirectional and only monitors incoming traffic. There are plenty of free firewalls, some of them better than those you would pay for. I have used many firewalls in the past and by far the most hassle free firewall I've used is Kerio Firewall. The problem with most firewalls are that they are permission based. They will detect traffic and prompt the user to either to allow or deny it. Unfortunately, the messages are cryptic and, unless you are computer savvy, hard to interpret which makes the firewall for the most part useless. Kerio is different because it provides 2 modes, beginners and advanced. In the beginners (aka novice) mode, the firewall makes the decisions for you. So you don't need to be scratching your head to figure out whether to allow or deny the traffic. You can find and download it at: http://www.filehippo.com/software/firewalls/

Look for Sunbelt-Kerio Firewall. The website includes other firewalls, many of them are excellent. Comodo Pro and Sygate Firewall are both free and excellent alternatives. However, it is more suited for those who are familiar with Internet protocols.

Yes, Windows XP does have a firewall, as good as any of them. To activate it, click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, and on the bottom row, click on Windows Firewall. Click to turn it on, and click OK at the bottom.

I've tried other two other firewalls, both of which screwed up my computer badly, and took a lot of work to get them off. Since XP's firewall is built-in to run with XP, I'd recommend you stay with that one.

Yes, Xp has a built in firewall. It's a M$ product. M$ is known for buggy, bloated software with security holes galore. Do you want to trust their firewall? Not I. Your better off with a hardware firewall/router but ZoneLabs offers their ZoneAlarm firewall free though the Pro version is better.
Don't touch their anti-virus, it sux. Try AVG for a free av if you need one, or get Esets Nod32.
