if you have Sky HD it is yes - or a HD DVD - or a bluray DVD - or an XBOX 360. if you dont have a HD source then its a waste, most plasmas/lcd tellys are HD ready now though.

As the prices have gone down so much and so many of the major stations are now recording in HD I would say yes. I definetly can see a difference in the picture. One thing that you have to remember though, which I forgot about is that if you get an HD TV, you probably will not have an HD DVD and you have to remember that when getting tapes. I know I goofed and got an HD DVD and it didn't play. Also, I have a TIVo, and recorded in HD and then tried to download it to a DVD and found that it doesn't download correctly and play correctly, so had to remember that anything I wanted to download I had to go back to the regular station to record. Just passing along a little known or talked about fact. So, you might want to upgrade everything, which could get expensive, or just do what I do, and wait for the DVD's in HD to get cheaper. It's the way of the world, everything gets cheaper. That is except Blu-ray, which will probably end up something like Sony Betamax, if you remember that, it will become a museum piece.

Depends on what you want to do with it, if you're just a casual viewer of TV I'd say not.

If you are avid to big fan of movies then could be, but not yet.

The main argument for getting an HD TV right now is if you're a gamer and have an Xbox 360 or are getting a PS3.

The technology behind LCD / Plasma HD TVs is still pretty weak and does not give you the range of colour/brighness/contrast that old CRT TVs do. Samsung have a High Def CRT TV out now which is what I'm getting after a loooong period of consideration and trying out various other makes, the cost is good and the picture quality is excellent, there have been some problems with it but the latest updates to the model seem to have fixed it.

Do a Google for Samsung Slimfit or ask about it at your local electrical retailer - I just laugh at people who've bought LCD / plasmas now.

Hi, I pondered the idea for over a year and researched and if you have cable or a provider that has HD service the cost is minimal. There still is not a big variety of programming avialabe yet,but it you watch movies on a DVD player you will appreciate the quality of the picture. I would suggest a plasma tv with a minium contast ratio of 10000 to 1 and at least 2 HDMI conections , I found that for the $$$$ the Samsung 42" and 50" are the best to start out with. Amazon.com has the best prices by far and has free shipping to your door. Hope this helps you!

Only if you are going to buy a TV anyway... If not I'd wait awhile..

Like the first answer said you'd need a new HD ready DVD player and sky charges loads for HD subscription... plus there are only a few channels that are HD anyway.. and even then alot of the programmes they show aren't in HD format.

As far as I can tell they are marketing HD products without actually supplying the HD programming.

Best to wait until HD progresses and things get cheaper.

If you need to buy a TV anyway then I would go for it now just to save the need for swapping it again in the future but otherwise I would wait until it becomes more mainstream :)

Here how you can find out:
- You own one or more of the following:
- Next Gen Gaming Cosole: PS3/XBOX 360 (Wii is not really graphics hardcore)
- HD DVD player / Bluray Player (with movies to play on them because they're not quite the new standards for movies yet)
- Cable subscription with worthy HD channels

- You can get it for a good price: Don't pay too much since prices will keep dropping fast.

If you don't have any of these then you can stick with non-HD for a while.

Not unless you plan to buy a hd dvd player, or want to play xbox360 in hd (which also has a great value hd dvd player add on). Sky HD doesn't have that many channels in HD. They will continue to get cheaper & cheaper (more size for lower price) if you wait anyway & the switchover thing is for analogue to digital not analogue to hd.

yh
I got one but you need the following to really enjoy it
1)Sky HD subscription
2)A HD DVD recorder (i recommend a blu-ray disc player)
3) A PS3
4) Lots of cash or rich parents.

Plasma is better than LCD unless you are in a bright place like a conservatory. Plasma come from 38" though
