There really is no adjustment, you just want to be sure that the last quarter of the thermocouple is bathed in a blue pilot light flame without any yellow flame visible. If you are having a problem with the safety valve shutting down, more often it is the thermocouple that is worn and not producing the minute amount of electrical current to keep the safety valve open, providing that the pilot light is properly adjusted.

If you're talking thermocouples you must be talking about a gas appliance, either a water heater or a furnace. Fortunately they both work similarly. As the previous answer states, there is no adjustment, other than to make sure the flame is playing on the thermocouple itself. If the pilot doesn't stay lit, then you should buy a new thermocouple and screw it into the spot where the old one is installed on the valve. I use a butane match, like the ones used to lite a BBQ, for the next part. Allow it to stay out of the burner area until you've lit the pilot, then light the butance match and play the flame on the exposed end of the thermocouple while holding the pilot button down. After about 30-45 seconds, release the pilot button while continuing to play the flame on the thermocouple. If the pilot stays on, then the thermocouple was the problem, if the pilot goes out, then most likely the high limit fuse in the valve is blown and the valve will need to be replaced. This is a one time fuse and when it blows it renders the valve useless.

the flame should completely wrap around the thermocouple about 1/4" from the end. the hottest part of the flame is the tip so keep the thermocouple toward the tip not buried at the base of the flame.
