Disregard "Country Boy". To start with, you do not disconnect a plug wire to get a timing signal from it. In no situation would you want to do that. The wire you want to disconnect is to eliminate computer control of the ignition advance. Then you can accurately read the base timing. The wire is brown, in a large, black 1-pin connector under the plastic relay cover on the passenger side of the firewall. As soon as you unplug it, the RPM's will drop and the check engine light will come on. Even easier than plugging a vacuum line. Super easy.

there is a tan wire with a black tracer that has a plug that you disconnect, it breaks out of the harness by the brake booster...put your timing light around the #1 wire, (front driver's side) and check the timing. It should be around 0 degrees on that motor...but you can bump it a little to 2 or 4 for a lil kick (advance)...and Country Boy should not have his hood up...leave the cars alone dude

Dis-connect # 1 cylinder wire. Facing the grille it's the first plug wire on the right (closest to the radiator). OR - sitting in the drivers seat it's the cylinder furthest away on the left hand side. The timing tab is in the lower left closet to the dampener pulley. A single groove is machined perpendicular to the face of the dampener. This represents top dead center of # 1 cylinder.
