Didn't Spartans have bronze shield and bronze sword? It's hard to go for one kill with holding a sword in one hand and that's hard to do even with a katana unless you're strong and skilled like Musashi Miyamoto. So samurai would move around and come in for the kill. The moment the spartan opens up to use his sword, the samurai would come in at the same time. This is a technique taught in one of the style in Japanese sword fighting. If used correctly, Katana can cut or break through another Katana and a steel pipe which was done as a demonstration on a tv show. Besides, samurai's armor was made to defend against a Katana and it still didn't really mean much.

My vote is for the spartan. Although the samurai has a great sword, The spartans strict training would easily evade that slash, And kil lthe samurai. There are a few points to this : 1)Samurais rely on killing their oppoment in 1 slash. If they dont manage that signle chance, they're gonna loose their balance and fall.
2)Spartans historically DID NOT use an assortment of weaponry. They were all equally equipped with a sword and shield. So a shield, assuming the user knows how to use it, can easily deflect any kind of single weapon attack

That's a tough one, it would be quite bloody. I'd plump for the Spartans in the end, although must admit i'm not hugely knowledgeable on the Samurai. The Spartan policy of having lovers fight side by side to increase the ferocity of fighting was a very clever idea and might provide them with an edge.

EEMMMM.. Both are well trained from early age.Both are physically fit. Both are proud and would die before surrender. I could go on and on, But here's the nuts.
The Spartans fought in tight formation shields locked,fighting as a unit.every man fighting for the man and men around him.They were singly brilliant, united all most invincible.
Man to man samurai wins.
A group of say 100 in pitched battle Sparta EVERY TIME

i vote for the Samurai. because of weapon.
the Spartans have an assortment of weapons that have different uses, but the Samurai's Katana can cut a person from head-to-groin. that literally means, cutting a person into two, through his entire spine. its a very powerful weapon, if you ask me.

I would put this down mainly to speed, providing they are not wearing Armour.
