There are scientist and there are scientist.
Social scientist, deal in social and psychological aspects of the society, then all major subject like, chemistry, physics, Geography, mathematics, all have researchers and they are all doing scientific investigation.
There are research scientist, and there are investigative scientist, there are pure scientist and there are applied scientist.
You should have all round education first, then you need to decide on a subject at college level, and then you need to pursue that subject at master level and then at doctorate level and then at post doctorate level.
By this time whatever you have not studied you will be able to understand it by just reading about it on your own, or will have enough people around you who can explain certain things to you that you need to understand.

Chemistry, Physics, nearly every science and math course (very challenging) you should take. Try to take humanities courses as well and computer science. Go ask your high school counselor otherwise about courses you should pursue. He/she may have all of the info.
