Giusseppe Garibaldi was the central figure. You need to look in Wikipedia for the answers. Italy and Germany unified at about the same time

Not exactly. Count Cavour was the builder of unified Italy. He was minister of the king of Piamont and then, by very clever political maneuvers he absorbed the kingdom of the two Sicilies, and the northern kingdom of Milan. Later, the king Victor Manuel invaded the pontifician states, outcasting the pope to the very small territory that the pope has today.
About Garibaldi, he was the warrior who made the fighting, but sometimes was defeated, and besides, most of the unification was made by politics. Cavour delivered Niza, Garibaldi's birth place to France in exchange for french cooperation to obtain other territories. Garibaldi was not very happy about this, but there was nothing he could do against Cavour
