you'd need to do some market research. Where are you planning on having your shop. If you can afford a high street shop you need to generate a lot of income to cover your costs so lots of people through the door would be good. However, if there is a claires accessories or something similar just up the road you will probably never be able to compete with them on price or variety so something more off beat might be better. Also if you're premisis is off the beaten track as well you should go for a more specialist market, something people will travel to get. Fetish jewellery perhaps. You may also be able to generate some income by showcasing local craftsmen. There are probably a lot of crafters out there making unusual and attractive jewellery for fun. Let them display their work in your shop, you won't have to outlay any money but they can pay you a commission for anything that's sold. The disadvantage of that is that you are responsible for the security of the work and jewellery is one of the easiest things to steal being small so you need to make sure you address that issue.

Precious metals you can obviously charge more for but your initial outlay will also be higher. Again you need to consider whether you can compete with the big names who can afford to sell good quality jewellery at low prices.
You might be able to get around this buy selling antique or second hand jewellery. If you know what you are looking for you can pick up some good deals. Remember, the key to a healthy profit is buy at the right price, the market will dictate what you can sell at so every penny you can shave of your buying price is a penny more in your pocket.

good luck

Most popular OR best profit margins?

If I personally wanted to open a shop like you suggest I would go with unusual items and those with precious stones and metal.

You can divide the shop up, showing different items in different parts of the shop.

The cheap everyday stuff can be brought from most retailers such as Topshop, Principles etc.

You are going to have to have a Unique Selling Point (USP) over the other retailers if you decide to go down the cheap everyday stuff - why are the consumers going to go to your shop (and more than likely pay more) then going to a high street retailer?

Look into doing some market research of the area. That will definitely help in the decision you make.
