If I remember correctly, Nixon was not involved in the planning or execution of the break-in at the office in the Watergate of the Democratic National Committee by persons hired by the Committee to Re-Elect the President. However, once the burglary was discovered he was involved in the cover up.

G. Gordon Liddy, the supposed "architect" of the Watergate burglary, along with several of his underlings, went to prison.

he knew, but he lied and said he didn't know about it.so he resigned and Gerald Ford took over and pardoned Nixon first thing. to "heal the country"..
