I know Puffer fish look cute i also have had them in the past but on average they are bullies in the tank you might be lucky to get the odd one who isn`t , but is it really worth terrorising the whole tank for the sake of a Puffer fish
Why don't you have a separate tank for the Puffer fish then you can enjoy them without them harming the other fish

RE:
Can I keep a Freshwater- Pufferfish in a Community Aquarium?
I want a freshwater pufferfish for my 155l aquarium. I have a community aquarium and want a puffer that does not fin nip or harm any of the inmates in my aquarium! Could you give me the name of a puffer that is for a FRESHWATER community aquarium and that is rather peaceful?

I actually bought a freshwater puffer because the people at the pet shop told me he was a "community fish". How could I resist such a cute little fish! Anyhow I had a 200 gallon tank that had in it 3 African dwarf frogs, a "baby whale" {he was 6 inch's} and an African black knife which cost me 100 dollars when I bought him at 3" in length he was at that time 10 inch's long. Then I started to notice that their fins were not looking right so I thought maybe they had fin rot. I treated them for fin rot and lo and behold it happened again. Now seeing as my fish were rather expensive I took them to a local pet shop who assured me it was not fin rot that in fact something was eating their fins!. They asked what else I had in the tank I told them and they told me no matter what the other store told me a freshwater puffer is NOT a community fish it is aggressive and by time I got home to get that fish out and take it down to the pet shop for them to resale for me, it had eating one of my little frogs!
So do NOT put a puffer in a community tank any informed reputable store will tell you this. And I don't mean Petco or Petsmart {that's where I got mine}

First thing first, most of puffers in the market ARE NOT true freshwater fishes but categorized under brackishwater group. Thus, they are compatible in a community tanks with the same water parameters. Set up a brackishwater community tank or African Cichlid tank. They will look best with their good tankmates like Mono Angels, Bumble Bee Catfishes, Scats and Dwarf African cichlids. They are sometimes troublesome but they can hold up their own turf. Good Luck!

The Dwarf (Malabar) Pufferfish is the one that would best less aggressive for your community tank. (They are also know as Pea Puffers)
.
The Figure 8 Pufferfish is aggressive & nips.
The Spotted Green Pufferfish is also nippy.
I did some research for you.. Try this web site:

Most puffers will have the tendency to fin nip. The best trick is to make sure the tank is big, other tankmates are faster swimmers AND the tank should be heavily planted. Apparently, the plants will help to break the puffers line of sight. Once the puffers can't see its target, it'll quit the chase. Also, keep the puffers will fed so it won't disturb the rest.

No. Both freshwater puffers (Indian dwarf and Target) need solitary tanks and will not do good in a large community.

You can if fish in your aquarium are about the same size as the puffer...If they are bigger the puffer will blow itself up and scare them. If that dont work it could be frustrated or bored. Try putting in one or two more. This idea was proved by adding more tiger barbs and serpae tetras in a community tank.
