All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free. After you install any of them, make sure you update them to get the full affect.
AVG Removes I-Worm/Stration · BackDoor.Generic3.GBB and .GBC · Worm/Generic.FX · Exploit.WMF

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

Be realistic about "114,000 Microsoft Virus Definitions" and that if you have a computer runing Microsoft, instead of 700+ FREE, immune OSes, and it goes surfing to kid games websites, or to myspace, youtube, etc., just opening up the website gives you virus from some of the content!
Solutions, thinking "inside the Microsoft box": AVG, SpybotS&D, Lavasoft Adaware, Shootthemessenger, must all be on your Microsoft computer. Seek at google in a search.
Solutions, thinking "outside the Microsoft box": grab the FREE http://pclinuxos.com that is totally immune to all the "114,000 Microsoft Virus Definitions", and let it boot and run in the CDrom for all the kids to visit the Internet kid sites.
It is also upto 50X faster, PLUS contains 1900 FREE games and programs, but, it doesn't mess with the hard drive, unless you decide to install it on 6Gb of the hard drive space, as a seperate partition, dual booting with the crapware windoze system, or you just 'plonk' the windoze virus magnet entirely.
Huge forum and help files so noobs have sources of instant help.
Smart mom's think 'outside the box', and friends don't let friends use virus magnet crapware.

what is the best free Anti Virus? Use free Avast or free Avira (you can only run one AV): why not to use free AVG: AVG Free does not contain Anti-Rootkit protection so rootkits may be hidden in your system. AVG Free does not contain the new Safe Downloads & Instant Messaging protection (Web Shield technology) so it does not screen your downloads and communication for viruses and spyware. what is the best free anti spy software ? There is not one, the best approach to spyware is called the layered approach & this is the best.

There were many good recommendations. But be aware most anti-virus and spyware protection is out of date even if you get automatic updates. There are always new threats, and threats that are under investigation that there is no protection for. That is why you receive updates so frequently. It's always playing "CATCH UP!".
Now if you use the Internet Freedom Disk the nasties have no place to hide on your computer. Simply reboot and they are GONE GONE GONE! It's free!

You still must have anti-virus and anti-spyware software installed because you can get infected even from purchased software. But the IFD is the best you can get for protecting with surfing.
I got so tired of repeating myself I blogged it.

AVG FREE works phenominally, I haven't had any viruses since I installed it 6 months ago. The biggest plus is that it is free.
