I believe that the leaves are poisonous, and don't want to ruin a batch of compost.

The leaves are toxic to eat, but these toxins get broken down during the decomposition process. The Poinsettia is fine to compost.

These articles mention composting Poinsettia - http://www.extension.iastate.edu/news/2007/jan/070101.htm, http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/robeson/agriculture/poinset.php, http://ezinearticles.com/?How-to-Kill-Poinsettia&id=89771

Another site that lists items that be composted is http://www.organicgardeninfo.com/organic-gardening-compost.html

Why are you composting your poinsettia? If you cut them back by 2/3, they will come back out and you can enjoy them again next year. Plus, they make pretty green plants all year long. What you cut off can be put into the compost pile, if you wish to do that.

Poinsettias are NOT poisonous. The pesticides and growth regulators used while growing them are. By the time you want to put the plant into your compost, the chemicals should have dissipated. Go ahead, make great earth!

Just to be on the safe side, I wouldn't add them to the compost. Even though I believe that the poison qestion only applys to the eating of the leaves.
