the problem your having is in the power head part of it,i just got a Coleman generator exchanged over this problem, their bad to do this, but the slip rings shouldn't cause this to happen, the charging head is whats causing this one to do that its not regulating the voltage properly on it,look in the owners manual and see if there isn't a section in there for this problem, good luck ,i hope this help,s.

What vehicle has a generator these days, especially one that puts out 160 volts?
Generators were used in the earliest cars, up to about the 1950 decade. Even then they would put out 6 volts, perhaps 12 in some models, not 160.
In any case, slip rings would cause intermittent voltage, not over voltage. If you give the make, year and model of your car perhaps someone could help.

160 volts? there aint no system in the world that can do this. i think you probably mean 16 point 0 volts. thats alot more in line. dirty slip rings will not do this. check battery, for being bad, and the gen is full-fielding(trying extra hard to charge, because it sees heavy demand), but most likely, you have a stuck voltage regulator. you specified generator, so i assume you are talking about an older system, with an external regulator. if you are talking about an alternator(sometimes called a generator, is confusing),most likely its got an internal voltage regulator. im not sure in your case, because i guess you were too busy to bother saying what kind and year of car you are working on.its kinda difficult to help when you dont have any info.

A slip ring is an electromechanical device that allows the transmission of power and electrical signals from a stationary to a rotating structure. A slip ring can be used in any electromechanical system that requires unrestrained, intermittent or continuous rotation while transmitting power and / or data. It can improve mechanical performance, simplify system operation and eliminate damage-prone wires dangling from movable joints.
Also called rotary electrical interfaces, rotating electrical connectors, collectors, swivels, or electrical rotary joints, these rings are commonly found in slip ring motors, electrical generators for alternating current (AC) systems and alternators and in packaging machinery, cable reels, and wind turbines. They can be used on any rotating object to transfer power, control circuits, or analog or digital signals including data such as those found on aerodrome beacons, rotating tanks, power shovels, radio telescopes or heliostats.
A slip ring (in electrical engineering terms) is a method of making an electrical connection through a rotating assembly. Formally, it is an electric transmission device that allows energy flow between two electrical rotating parts, such as in a motor.

I believe your voltage regulator is bad or your remote sence is not hooked up (not all vehicles have remote sence).
