Because loads of religious fascists in the States decided it should be then imposed this on the rest of the World (so much for the land of the free!).

These days there is so much money in the illegal drug trade that those in positions of power (drug barons, the police, politicians, the CIA etc.) are making so much money (all tax free) that there is very little hope of proper legalisation.

All they have to do is keep the people ignorant and as you can see from the posters here that is not very difficult - most people are sheep and will believe exactly what they are told.

What would happen if they legalised all drugs? Those who choose to take them would harm only themselves and huge amounts of crime and the money from it would be wiped out over night.

What will it take to make it legal? People becoming educated and intelligent (not likely) as to the true nature of drugs or the rich and powerful becoming decent, honest people (ha ha!).

Cue the Reefer Madness generation (ie.. the first two people who answered)...

I smoked pot in my early 20s, then gave it up because I didn't like it anymore. For me, it wasn't conducive to furthering my life (career, love, everything). Other people smoke pot, but don't drink and handle it just fine.

I wish it were legalized, even though I still wouldn't smoke it. Decriminalize it and focus on the hard stuff. Tax it and regulate it.

Consider this: Alcohol kills thousands of people every year in America. It's far more dangerous and would be classified at the same schedule level as cocaine. Put it this way: if alcohol were a new drug, it would be illegal, too.

Because there are a lot of people making a lot of money because it is illegal.
The Drug dealers get 1000 times as much than if it were legal.

All the private prisons make a fortune charging the state for taking care of prisoners, then not doing so because nobody cares if they don't (except the prisoners)

All the police get extra big budgets by touting all their drug arrests, with a hundred times as many show arrests for drugs than for theft, much less other violent crimes.

Most of the criminal legal work is for drugs, so lawyers on both sides, judges etc would have to solve real problems.

The politicians find that it is an easy scapegoat, taking away attention from the real criminals bribing them to make their crimes legal.

All you need to make pot legal is an honest government, a free press, a stable and sane populace, and real science. I will not hold my breath while waiting.

did you know that the phillip morris corporation that makes malrboro cigs and others is the largest lobbyist against the decriminalization of marijuana? and the budweiser people are the second? hmmm, something to think about, no? how about dow chemical, the tree loging, cotton and corn lobbies to keep industrial hemp illegal as well.
simply put, to find alot of answers in this world, follow the money, see where it came from, and ask yourself why did they spend/give that money.
marijuana was criminalized along with alcohol during the prohibition era. read the amendment to the constitution for some info.
another resource would be the group called NORML, or the National Organization for the Reformation of Marijuana Laws.
other countries, Holland, Canada and Australia, to name a few, allow for marijuana consumption.
i also feel that public ignorance is another reason for the demonization of marijuana.
Uncle Sam would also have a hard time taxing your closet grown stash, and we all know how he likes to put his hand in your pockets.
another thing is the driving while intoxicated thing, a breathilizer type device needs to be invented for instant, and reliable, testing for motorists.
and with all the new no smoking (cigs) in public things happening, looks like bad news.

Because you can grow it in your own home or garden and it could not be taxed. It could be licenced but that could not be enforced.

Think of the billions spent on prohibition of drugs and the crime that is generated by the organised crime who supply them.

Heroin addicts probably generate a crime wave in their own right

Time to look at the reasons why people want to get zonked out of their heads. If people want to destroy themselves there must be a reason for it.

Marijuana is illegal because a majority of people in the various states and the nation at large decided that it was detrimental and should be controlled. To legalize it will take a similar majority opinion in the oposite direction.

The only reason marijuana isn't legal is because the government can't make any money off of it because people can grow up wherever they want.

It's illegal because the people who make drug laws are really uptight. More democracy will make it legal though.

It is a drug plain and simple. Don't give me the "God put it here" speech. The fact is it alters your state of mind, and is a depressant. It leads to other drugs, poor work performance, and laziness. It is a waste of money. As an adult you have to set an example for the youth. And posting arguments like this is irresponsible and ridiculous. Just think of all the kids that have just read your question. It is like you are condoning it for them, when you are selfish and ignorant.
