Can anyone suggest an area I could move to which has cheap property prices but which also has quick transport links to London where I need to commute in order to work?

The simple answer to your question is Ashford in Kent.

Property prices are much lower than they are in London and they are even cheap by Kent standards.

Best of all in 2009 the fast link to London will come into use. At present it takes commuters 1 hour and 20 minutes to reach London. In 2009 it will take just 40 minutes!!

While property is overvalued in the rest of the south east it is the general concensus among experts that property prices are likely to rise significantly in Ashford in the next five years as more and more people move to this area from London in order to buy affordable housing.

Grantham has cheap property prices and GNER trains to King's Cross in the centre of London only take 1h15min.

The season ticket will cost you a fortune though.

Kent is a popular county for commuters into London.

Or try Watford, Tring, Hemel Hempstead, or Milton Keynes, St Neots.

Depends how much you can afford:

Watford, Hemel Hempstead, Milton Keynes, Tring, High Wycombe, Aylesbury, Bicester.

Google train times and see how long it will take.

I heard a tale of a bloke who commuted daily from Goole in Humberside so anythings possible with a good train line

Try renting in Farnham surrey, there is a direct train into London Waterloo and takes approx 1 hr. Houses to rent there are about £400 a month so quite affordable.

try them out at: www.mann&co.com

Try Redhill, Surrey. 30 mins into London Victoria, frequent trains, you can get a 2-bed house for £180K. a 3-bed house for £220K.
Close to lovely countryside too, and Gatwick airport, and just 30 mins drive from the coast

I hadn't heard about this, although that is extremely authentic that you may't get Housing or Council Tax benefit once you've capital of over £16,000. some human beings may regard this as straightforward or a 'poverty seize'. a better quantity of capital injection does no longer make countless enormous difference in a persons'' lifetime because they could nevertheless have important earnings over benefit loss and paying all their housing costs. some thing like £one hundred,000 is a lot extra arguable, in the experience that they were no longer on reward they could help their little ones as first time clients for deposits or for his or her better education costs, or have the minimum to make certain a organisation. after all isn't it peanuts we are finally speaking about, the position interior the united kingdom are you able to purchase a respectable resources for 100K? i have in my opinion continually idea the lottery to be enormously unhappy so please excuse my bias.
