Pc speakers work, but no startup sound.?

Question

I just reformatted my computer and reinstalled everything. Initially it all worked. As I reinstalled things and I don't know what did this my system sounds stopped working. When I go into the sounds panel and choose a sound for an event the 'play' button doesn't even work. Someone please help!!

Tried rolling back my sound driver. still didn't work

you installed a sound driver update from the microsoft update site roll back your driver and it should work
