That really wouldn't work. I mean, Happy Annual Celebration of Aging to You just doesn't sound the same. :)

For the same reason we call it a wedding anniversary and not the annual celebration of an aging marriage. The second definition of "birthday" is the anniversary of a birth, the first being the day of birth, according to Merriam-Webster.

Aging is generally looked at as having many negative connotations. People are unwilling to celebrate the fact that they are getting older, and thus; getting closer to the end of their days here on Earth.

Have you paid attention to how youth orientated the culture truly is?

Society has gradually changed from revering the older members of society, into worshiping the young and beautiful; unreal as this may be.

This is definitely not a good choice, or helpful to society as a whole; as we lose a lot of our history and connection to the world, by hanging onto the oh so fleeting days of youth.

Easy to answer. First it is traditional. Second the other is a mouthful. Can you imagine a two or three year old trying to say that? Some have a rough enough time with birthday.

because people old as me dont give a rats rear about being poltically correct. we feel its an achievement to wake up in the morning and will celebrate it the way it is.
