Perry McCarthy appeared in 2002 and 2003 on the BBC's Top Gear motoring show as The Stig, a masked, anonymous, racing driver who evaluated the latest high performance cars. McCarthy was the original, black-suited Stig, who was "killed off" at the start of the 3rd series, because he revealed being the Stig in his autobiography.
Most commonly thought of now as Dmaon Hill

The black stig was Perry McCarthy until he revealed it was him so they 'killed' him off when he drove off an Air Force Carrier.
The new white stig is actually several different drivers depending on availability because the new Stig has a much larger role in the series. Julien Bailey, Damon Hill and Mark Webber are all believed to of been 'the stig' in recent years.

On Top Gear they have a completion to see what is the fastest car and the guy who tests them all is called 'the stig' but nobody knows who he is.

Do you mean 'who is the Stig'?
If you do - it was Damon Hill - not sure who it is now but suspect it still is Damon Hill and it is filmed in Surrey (not far from Brooklands) on a small airfield still in use!

the question confuses. the answer to what is the stig. he is a mystery driver who gets to burn rubber on the latest cars - who is the stig. Speculation is that he's Damon Hill/Nigel mansell. I personally think he's jay kay! - someone with a passion for cars and has a lot of spare time between making very busy and interesting acid jazz albums. Think about it!!!

Not what. Who is the Stig. A racing driver who does not wish to be known publically so you will have to hazard a guess. I have my own idea but bet it keeps you guessing.
