Mahathma Gandhi may have said this, but you need to realized he was trying to bring an OVER-POPULATED and impoverished nation in to order. I have a lot of respect for Candi, but this theory completely ignores a fact of nature. Of the 1.4 MILLION known species on earth, only Humans and Dolphins are able derive pleasure from sex. Since only two types of beings derive pleasure from sex, we must have been made and/or evolved in this way for a reason.

An interesting footnote:

While it is not widely publicized, Gandhi liked to surround himself with and oftenly have sex with a band of young women.
Politicians oftenly don't practice what they preach.

YES, should be the answer from an Indian perspective. I don't know about other cultures. But In Indian culture which is known and admired by other cultures also, it is said that sex should be used to procreate the human if u want. It also says that we can live without having sex. It is not necessary to have sex. You must have heard this concept 'THE BAL-BRAMHACHARI', in Indian VEDAS' it is said that many of the ancient SADHUS, RUSHIS and many spiritual souls have followed that concept. That means they are not supposed to touch any woman or looking at her with any demand. As per the theory u have to look at a woman only as a Mother or a Sister. It has many many many advantages than to marry a woman and produce another human beings.

The good old days have gone when Mahatma Gandhi has said this. Things are changing, we have to amend ourselves according to the situations. Today there are a number of family planning methods. If you do not want to have children, have sex for your satisfaction, and need not produce children. If sex is meant only for producing children, then the population will explode. If sex with your wife is giving you satisfaction and happiness, then whats harm in it. Ofcourse, sex with a stranger or with multipule people is harmful. But sex with your wife, which is ethical is always good for health and strengthens your relationship with your spouse.

Yeah, listen to the bald little old fart wearing the diaper.
Sex is fun and has many social, psychological and cultural benefits for us humans, far beyond mere procreation.
If human sex were only for procreation, we'd have "rut" like animals and only mate when it was "the season." But we don't and it isn't.
The sex drive is what has built our culture, drives our science and makes our arts. Though for Mohandis and his followers, it is probably a good idea if they take it easy on the old driver ... the subcontinent is filling up pretty fast.

Namaste

In the Garuda Purana there is a very clear indication on this matter. It says that sex is meant for the begetting of good children only, who will bring honor to the family and the community and therefore the society itself. Any use of sex for the purpose of
pleasure, power, or amusement is to be avoided, since it can do nothing but bring
unhappiness. (In case you do not know, Garuda is the eagle that Vishnu, the Indian God, has as his vehicle ... he carries Vishnu here & there).

The Purana continues to say that it is the duty of the unborn child to pray that he / she
is born only into a family that is wealthy, of good character, that will give a proper chance for a good lifetime.

I am sure that lack of sensitivy about this matter causes untold grief.

who cares what Gandhi says? Sex is meant for much more than just procreation. That is a neat side benefit and the best sex in the world; but it's for much more...

No, it is a foundation of a relationship. It is a way to show love and affection to each other. It is to procreate children but to increase the family which is the result of love.Sex is a path towards God,towards salvation, towards meditation.Sex is a point of No-mind.Where you are yourself and directly connected to God.

Well.. that is what nature designed it for, but if we are to rise above our animal instincts and background, we must then find more noble motivations for our actions.

If you look at his films and books, Gandhi surrounded himself with very young girls and enjoyed sleeping with them. He was a bit nutty. As with all politicians and lawyers (they forget to mention that don't they), take his words with a large grain of salt.

Sex is however you want to take it just like life given to interpretation. But, in all honesty it's chemical stimulant to procreate. People like to believe there's more to it but, it only has more meaning if you apply it more.

Pain is only to alert the brain of danger. People use it to control, dominate, manipulate, pleasure, suffice whatever feeling and desire to validate their existence. It's all dependent on interpretation and how you utilize it.
