Half the time, in my experience, it is just a matter of timing. I might start a book one day and not get past the first paragraph. But I get distracted. Or its not grabbing me. Or I decide to pick up another book instead. I could pick up the same book a day later, a week later. And I read the same paragraph and I'm hooked. I can't put it down. So mood and timing have something to do with it. HOWEVER, that being said there are times when even after multiple tries I just cannot get into it. It's not the right fit. There's no interest. No connection. There is no reason to waste your energy reading something you're not interested in if it's just for pleasure reading. So you might give it a try...

That being said, I really LOVED Spindles End. I didn't think it was boring at all. I just immediately connected with it. I liked her language. I liked her style.

If you like novel length retold fairy tales, it is a good book. Robin McKinley is an accomplished author. Her two retellings of Beauty and the Beast (Beauty and Rose Daughter) are better, IMHO.

I like the longer fairy tales. The details and motivations are missing from the original tales. I understand that they were oral stories passed from generation to generation, and that they had to be shorter and simpler for novice storytellers to tell, but I enjoy the fleshing out of the story and the characters. The stories are compelling, which explains why they have been around for centuries.

Well, I am a big fan of Robin McKinley and never heard of anyone reacting like you to her books, I have them all and have never ever given up on any book by any author before getting past the first sentence, even if I decided I didn't like it eventually. I suggest you don't continue trying to read her books as you clearly are not the person to whom they would appeal
