I mean, how do I stop the ice from taking up the whole thing?

When the frost gets to be 1/2" thick the freezer should be defrosted. Every time you open the door the moisture in the room condenses onto the coils and eventually builds up. There is no real way from stopping that from happening. That is just the way it happens.

Robert C has the right answer. But if you don't have a lot of things in the freezer and there is a lot of empty space, you must fill it up with something as having a lot of empty space will also cause it to freeze over.

condensation could be your problem or
you have the setting at too low bring it up to about middle
if i were you check the rubber seal it may be faulty and allowing warm air in.
been there and done it.

if frost free the drain is plugged or your door gasket isnt sealing good
