So that Britain could be exploited by selling them armaments and war supplies in two World Wars and then come in at the last minute and save the day. Only kidding Marshall aid saved this country from the idiotic politicians who took us to war in the first place. (sound familiar)
In the 1770's there were probably some people (with severe personality disorders)who wanted to be politicians and they started expounding the theory of no taxation without representation. Now look what you got !!! We have it in this country everybody is having their own devolved government and more politicians. For those in the US who do not know Britain is a group of four different distinct countries lumped together as the United Kingdom Part of Ireland opted out. (Well it kind of works in Iraq) Everybody forgets that the politicians all have to be paid .... More tax and then they have to justify their existence... more tax
And please you do not have bad teeth and skanky women in the US !!! Sweeping generalisations are the answer for not having to look at a problem too closely.
God Bless America.

Taxation without Representation: Though many of us are not that thrilled about Taxation with Representation.
The fact that England forgot that we were Enlishmen and not Colonials.
The feeling that they were being ruled by a Tyrant 3000 miles away. Though in effect we may have traded that for 3000 Tyrants one mile away. (From the movie: The Patriot)
The idea that we would be better off as a self governing people.
Needless to say there was no legal justification for it. The reason the fighters of the 1776 rebellion are called Patriots is because they won! The reason the fighters of the 1860 rebellion are called Rebels is because they lost.

I'll answer your question with a question. What is the difference from what Americans wanted to be free from then and to what they want to be free from now? We still have a King george to deal with except he is more of a tyrant than King George of England.
Alas, there is no escaping to another country for our citizens. We are stuck with this brutal dicktator for another two years. And all the tea in England will not help us get through this dark period in our history.
