Tylenol 3 is very constipating. That is the chief complaint of most patients. It also becomes less effective after long term use. Less often complained about, but occurring quite often, is addiction. Unfortunately, I've taken care of many patients who've gotten to a point where they feel they NEED Tylenol 3 as, a sleep aid, a mood enhancer, or just plain felt they NEEDED it, despite not having pain. Recently I was examining an older patient. One of the first questions I always ask is whether the patient is experiencing pain. When asked, the patient stated, "No." Not more than 5 minutes later the patient asked to have 2 pain pills. When I asked why they were needed, when there wasn't any pain, the patient stated, "I take 2 Tylenol 3 every 4 hours at home." I left the patient to spend a few minutes reviewing their chart and medical history. Not more then 5 minutes later, the patient complained of pain, and the Tylenol was given.
You should also be aware that each Tylenol #3 contains 325mg of acetaminophen. The person who takes 10 tablets per day is ingesting 3250 mg of a drug that causes liver damage in doses of 4500 mg, or higher.
Try to stick with using the medication only when needed for pain. If you experience constipation 100-200 mg of Colace (a stool softener) is usually enough to relieve it.

Yes, that can result in addiction, codeine is an opiate drug and if your body gets used to it it will stop helping the pain. I started with 6 Tylenol 3 per day (migraine), went up through Demerol, stadol, normal vicodin, and now I take1-2 extra strength vicodin on bad days (but there are days I take nothing)
The problem is is you cannot get through a day without it you may be habituate (not the same as addicted) or addicted, also the Tylenol is hard on the liver which should be checked periodically if you take any other medicines (just 2 tyl 3 per day will not hurt your liver)

I don't know how long you have been taking these but they can be addictive. That's one reason they are by prescription only. One day you'll find that 2 a day doesn't help and you will take 3 and so on until you can't make it through the day without a pain pill. And of course there is the danger of harming your liver. So please use caution and take only when needed.
