Lots of hold your breath 200s, like a 50 where you breath every 3 strokes, a 50 where you breathe every 5, etc. up to 9. Or alter it accordingly. Start out with small numbers and build up.
Do lots of pulling and kicking, but focus mostly on the pulling. You could do Threshold 300s or 400s. An example of a set would be.. 4 400s. The first one is on.. say the 6:00 and then the next one on the 5:45 and next one 5:30 and last one 5:15.
Another set... 8x200s on the.. say 2:50, all pulling.
And you should probably stop doing lots of sprint drills. Get your body out of the habbit of stopping after a 100 or a 200. I don't know if you have this problem with your stroke, but many sprinters have short choppy strokes because sprinting requires fast rate, so you may need to stretch out your strokes so you can increase the amount of water you pull per stroke.
Also, for later on when you start competing, remember to attack every wall as if you were just swimming a 50. That'll make you so much faster than a lot of other swimmers because they will tend to die on the walls and have a slow turnaround rate. Make sure you don't slack on your turns during practice.
Talk to your coach! He should be able to give you much better sets. :) Good luck!

First of all, the choice for you becoming a distance swimmer needs to be made with your coach. Not all swimmers were cut out for distance. Your usefulness to your team is going to based on your times, NOT your willingness to change on your own- think of the TEAM.
Now, as you will probably go ahead and try to transition anyway:
- Distance swimming requires a stronger aerobic capacity. Therefore, you need to train longer distances. Your sets will need to increase by at least 5-10x what your sets are now. Your total distance needs to increase significantly.
- RUN. Cross training is essential to build higher VO2 levels, and nothing is going to do this better than running. Additionally, running will help you build leg strength. Distance swimmers rely on kicking as much if not more than sprinters. PLUS if you start swimming 500/1000/1650s you will be making MANY more turns, and you want to take advantage of the leverage created therein.
- New breathing habits. In a 50, you should be taking one, two breaths MAX. You are obviously NOT going to do this in a 500. You have to develop breathing patterns and STICK to them. Treat each distance differently (many consider the 500 to be a sprint).
- Do NOT sacrifice form. Your technique is going to be NO different because you are going longer distances. Actually, your form becomes even more important. Swimming straighter is important too as you do not want to add distance to an already long race. Be mindful as you compete that you do not fall into the routine of circle swimming. Also be mindful that if the swimmer in the next lane is a circle swimmer, you can draft off of him/her by hugging the line.
I personally think you are crazy for even wanting to become a distance swimmer. Sprinters get all the glory, and with the glory comes the recognition as well as the girls.

You should work on your arm and shoulder strength- swimming takes a lot of it.
