Use 1 cup of bleach and run it through a regular wash cycle. Keep in mind that when you bleach a sweatshirt (or any commercially dyed fabric) you will not get a lighter shade of the same color. I once faded a purple shirt and got a turqoise blue... .

Add one cup of bleach to one gallon of water. Mix together. Put sweatshirt in. Do not have it all bunched up or it will bleach unevenly like tye die or worse. Keep an eye on it and keep stirring about every ten minutes.
DO NOT bleach black it will turn brown.

Depends on what effect you want. Diluted bleach works, but it can also change the color when it reacts chemically with the dyes. You can also try hydrogen peroxide (people use it to bleach their hair), lemon juice, sunshine, or of course just washing it a whole bunch.
Good luck!

Wash it and hang it on the clothesline. The sun fades everything.
