Did you know that squirrals had eyes??? LOL and they can smell it also...beacause its the main thing which they search everytime...and they go hide it somewhere and then they forget were they put it and then start searching for nuts again...

They dig for them.
But most times they arent actually IN the ground, they are on the ground. Like they fell off from trees.

Squirrels have very strong noses and they can smell it from far away also since they are so close to the groung they can see the little tips that stick out.

Do you mean in or on the ground?Well if it's in the ground they can probably smell it and if it's on the ground they can with out no doubt see it.

when squirrels bury nuts, they don't always remember where they put them.
people have watched groups of squirrels throught winter and sometimes the squirrels just forget where the nuts are

Memory.
Throughout the late summer and early fall, they will bury nuts everywhere for a later date. They remember where they bury them. When there is snow on the ground they go to a spot where they remember digging before.
