although this is no 100% fool proof method, more often than not, female fish are rounder when viewed from the side, and males are more torpedo shaped, this can sometimes be a very slight varience so it pays to look at alot of that species, otherwise if you go to your local fish store theres bound to be a person who has seen enough to know..

Well, it depends. Most fish you can tell by their size or color. Others you can look at the dorsal fin or some other fin and if it's triangular it's female and if it's straight it's male, but ... it's kinda hard some times.

Most females are slightly more plumper and less in colour. But not all females, you need to describe the fish you want to sex.

depends on which fish. but the more difficult ones can only be seen when breeding. ie with the breeding tubercules, fat ones for females and smaller ones for males

Usually a male will have large dorsal fins and anal fins.
A female will ahve small ones. If she's pregant she'll have a big belly.
