I know that core 2 duo's are better and cost more but what makes them different from a dual core processor ?

A dual core processor is just a generic name for any processor that has 2 cores, the Core 2 Duo is one type of dual core processor. It is sort of like asking which is better, a Corvette or a sports car.

If when you say dual core you are talking about the Pentium D, which was Intels previous dual core processor, the reason the Core 2 Duo is better is because it has a better architecture, faster front side bus, more cache, etc.
