I hate recommending tree huggers of any kind. I will be using them when I move and build solar heaters and solar electric generators.

There is an organization called the post carbon institute. They advocate using less oil and hugging trees. they have good ideas as to what to use for anything from heating to cooling your home without killing the petroleum plants.

Sheeps wool is used to insulate lofts, and grass or houseleeks (Sempervivium) is used as a 'green carpet' on the roof.
You could use cotton wool and grow cress on your model.
