Cromwell led a Parliamentary invasion of Ireland from 1649–50, with the twin aims of eliminating the military threat posed by the alliance of the Irish Confederate Catholics and English Royalists (signed in 1649) to the Commonwealth and punishing the Irish for their rebellion of 1641. Army soldiers broke into the town, killed 2,000 Irish troops and up to 1,500 civilians and burned much of the town.

I can only give you one thing and the point is a general one.
Cromwell set out to overthrow what he considered a tyrannous reign of a tyrannous king. He was motivated by his love for Christ, as a Protestant, and the king was Catholic. In his zeal he mutilated many of the churches and cathedrals of England.
I rather go with Martin Luther on this one, that God is perfectly capable of protecting himself, and if he wants to smash the
'saints images' he can do it himself. In encouraging this he encouraged a kind of disrespect among his own people that is never wise in a ruler. In the end, and this is my real point, he himself became the thing he fought against -- a tyrant. There is a saying that we become the thing we hate, and I think it is true of him. I personally feel he did England more harm than good.
And it has nothing to do with the theatre, Christmas, or other little bits. It has to do with his whole mindset. Constrast it to Elizabeth, who taught her people, Catholic and Protestant to live in as muchy harmony together as the times would allow, and worked to make that happen. Cromwell further divided the people in his actions and made of law abiding people, law breakers. If Christ told the Christians to abide under Nero,
well, Charles had a long way to go to be a Nero. I believe he should have abided under his king for the sake of his country.

Look up Drogheda (as in "the massacre of"). Cromwells men murdered everyone inside the town- AFTER it surrendered.
