hey that brings me back to when i first started bass.....
well what you want is a nice well known brand so you know you are going to get the quality and it wont fall apart on ya, i would suggest going to a big a$$ music store and have a little play with all the models find what you sound you want and make sure its comfortable to hold and easy for you to play then make note of the make, style pick up types ect. and go home and search the internet for it coz you will probably get it for 3/4 of the price it was in the shops. thats what i did and i saved £40 and then used it to pay for my first lessons!!so its worth the extra research or haggle with the shop keeper and you could get about £20 knocked off if you buy all your gear at the same time!
gud luck & rock ur heart out

I got a Fender Jazz Baz with a built in graphics equalizer. I say you go right to the top and get a nice Fender or get a Gibson bass because why not learn on something nice? You go for second rate boyfriends? Do you eat hamburger when you can choose steak ? Are you going to use margarine when you can be using butter? If you don't want to spend alot of cash I suggest you be on the lok out for a good used Gibson, Gretch, Fender.

These days you can learn how to play guitar over the internet. Check out Mark McKenzie's guitar video lessons here: http://www.jamoramaguitar.com The videos are very easy to follow and to my surprise extremely helpful even for advanced guitar players. For beginners I would have to say this is a gold mine.
I was able to improve my skills in just under 4 weeks and I am an intermediate-to-advanced guitar player; I've been playing guitar for the past 6 years and I was on stage with my band a lot of times.
I live in New York City, I wanted to go to a pro guitar teacher but that would have cost me over $1400 per month. Good thing with this internet, $1400 it's a lot of money for me. Good luck!

That's a fine bass to start with. Also check out instruments by Rogue and Ibanez; they make instruments in the same price range worth looking at.
I always advise spending no more than $200 on an instrument. You'll need an amp, cord and chromatic tuner in addition to the bass, so we're probably talking around $300.
Good luck!

Go to a local music store to try different brands and talk to other bass players. So much depends on your personal preferences - desired sound, type of strings, length of neck, placement of pickups, type of amp and speakers you are using, and on and on. Let me know if you have specific questions.
