Male platies have a gonopodium in place of an anal fin, this is an adapted fin that look like a spike and is used to impregnate the females. The females have a triangular anal fin, this is the fin at the bottom of the body nearest the anal opening. Colouration of both sexes is bright and does not alter in ether sex. Females do not develope a gravid spot until well after mating.

The anal fin of a male platy should resemble a horizontal tube and extend out underneath the body under the caudal peduncle.

A pregnant female may have a dark spot just before a normal looking anal fin.
normally the males are more colorful and have larger more attractive fins. the females are more drab in their coloration
and have short fins

the males have modified anal fins (the one underneath their bodies, behind the "belly"). On males these are tube-shaped and on females they're fan-shaped in profile

With the male fish, the anal fin is modified into a "Gonopodium". This is the pointed organ that the male uses to impregnate the female. You can tell the male, as he positions himself alongside the female & "sticks" her with this organ to transfer sperm.
