Solving equations or inequalities involving solving for the unknown.

If I need to know how much I'll be saving off the retail price using a coupon that gives 30% off for any item, then this is solving an equality.

If I need to know the minimum mark I need on my 4th test to pass a course, then this involves solving an inequality.

The purpose is to make the unknown known.
