I currently have 2 female bettas. Right now they are both in seperate bowls and my plan was to put them in a 10 gallon together. Then I heard that if you only have two they will fight/kill each other. Is this true? If I had three do you think this would be a stable number for them to get along?

just thought i'd add, since no one has touched this part of the question, will TWO female bettas get along. My plans isn't to keep a lot of them. I've heard that in groups of two they fight and in groups of four or more they will be peaceful. Has anyone ever kept TWO together peacefully?

I also hear from people that 2 is not a good number. I think its a bunch of bull. I've had females for a long time and two will get along fine. Its hard to break up a group of two though. They bond with each other and then when you add in the third after that bond is formed they might gang up on the third.

I've had up to 20 female bettas together in a 10 gallon thank before. Are your two about the same size? Female bettas aren't as territorial as male bettas and will not fight to the death unless one is much bigger than the other and keeps picking on the other one... which is true for all fish. I used to breed bettas and my female holding tanks were 10 gallon and I usually kept 10 females in each tank (one of each color so i could keep in track who was who, from what lines, etc) At one time I did have 20 small females in a 10 gallon for a few months and they were all fine, no fights.
Do keep a close watch because there are types of bettas out there who do not develop long fins and are mistakenly sold as females. Check the undersides of your females for that white spot, called the ovipositor, where the eggs come out. Thats how you know for sure they are females!

Female bettas get along great. Usually they might "girly fight" but nothing any serious. I have never had that problem I can put a male and female in a tank, and they are not aggressive. However, sometimes the male beta will get bullied by other fish.
Female betas will be fine in a peaceful tank. They'll usually swim by themselves at the back of the tank. If you have a tank with a bigger fish or not a lot of fish, the female might be tempted to control the tank. This does not happen very often, and young females won't be tempted. I have only had one female do that. SO, yes you can have a lot of female betas in a tank, and be peaceful.

I have all my betas in my thirty five gallon tank with my other freshwater fish. They don't fight much, but there's a trick to it- make sure you get two breeding nets and let them hang out in seperate corners of the tank for a few days with the other fish in there, that way they know the others and won't attack them, and they already have their own little bit of water to call territory.

keeping females together is sometimes fine -- you can add as many as you want size permitting -- just watch them. some of them are very agressive and some of them might be too passive and won't get anything to eat. a long shallow tank would be best with lots of plants and decorations they can hide in. they are territorial so you have to make sure there is enough territory to go around -- plants, decorations, rocks, etc. and watch them when they eat -- if one is a hog or one isn't eating then they need to be separated.
