Or do we have a say in, how long we'll last.

Yes, we will.
But it will be a very slow process at first, due to the distance involved and the fact that we have to build everything from scratch, or bring everything from Earth.

The ISS is never unmanned, so technically people from the human race are already permanently colonizing as we speak, but in the context of your question, I would say the first community of more than 15 peeps will be NASA based on the moon, and should pop up around 2030. Eventually military bases will appear in 2045 to 2060, and Civilian resorts should show up in 2060 to 2075. I would estimate that the first large scale functional habitat for 1000+ people wont show up for 200 - 300 years. I know that sounds pessimistic, but we just aren't putting mad money into the NASA program by US budget standards, or my standards. Far down the road... If all things stay hunky dory, there should be more humans in space than on earth by 2800 -3000

Very much doubtful. The measures taken to keep a person alive are very costly. Don't be fooled by some of the talk you see about space exploration. The space science professionals know very well that humans cant survive in space. That is why trips to the moon are so short. That is why the space station is not in outer space.

If it were not for the protective shield surrounding Earth, there would be no life here. Earth would look a lot like Mars.

yes, but first we need:

a space propulsion with decent speed.
a gravity system to keep our bones in good shape
a shielding system for radiation and cosmic rays, that is why the international space station is in an orbit so low, because the earth magnetophere and atmosphere protect it and all of us on the surface.
an efficient energy system, with a good recycling system.
a self sustaining portable enviroment, like a biosphere in order to eat ! unless you think that we are going to create technobubble star trek replicators ?

with this space travel will be funny. For now we are stuck to this planet.
Hopefully we will develop this technology BEFORE copletely drain this planet.

In my younger days, the cartoon character Dick Tracy had this fantastic thing called a "Wrist Radio" which was a watch looking thing he wore on his wrist. That was in the time period when we still had a thing called "Party lines". and you had to ask the other party on the line to hang up so you could make your call. ( There was no "Right to privacy") worries back then.

So, look at today------where we are in the space program and all! We will NEVER stop advancing, dreaming and doing.

Yes, I believe we will.

Yes, as soon as we can find a reliable source for the Dilithium Crystals needed to power the warp drive in our space ships.

Indeed. The whole purpose of the US placing our flag on the moon was to claim it for the United States of America.

We staked the first claim to its mineral rites and to its entire surface area.
