U.S. Americans tend to idealise individualism to the detriment of social responsiblity. Very few truly understand the devastations of war, certainly not in the immediate way that Europeans do.
And then there's the role of religion in the U.S. It's just not like that in Europe.

Americans are seen as stupid and culture-less when, in fact, there are more cultured, educated people than you think. Europeans are seen as cultural and intelligent however there are more louts than you think.
I've had a lot of contact with Europeans. The French are god awful and are truly the most hated people on earth. Their food is highly over-rated. We can thank the American media for making us all look stupid. I have to admit though, that there is a surplus of Americans who have no desire to learn anything that isn't taught on television.
