My Ex used to work on several chicken farms and she told me all the horror stories about how they were treated. They were crammed into cages where they could'nt lie down. If one got accidentally knocked over then the others just stood on it because there was no room to do anything else. There were many injuries and if the chicken was deemed unfit to lay, it was just thrown into the furnace. They also bring them 'into lay' by depriving them of food, water and light for a week or two. Many die during this process. Because of cramped conditions, they get a bug called 'Redmite' which can only be killed by using toxic spraying. All the chickens are supposed to be taken out and sprayed individually and the huge sheds sprayed when empty. This, of course never happened. They were sprayed whilst in the cages and the sheds as well. They were supposed to destroy one weeks egg production after spraying as they were toxic due to shell absorption...but guess what!?. The workers were entitled to a tray of free eggs each week as a 'perk' but very few took them.
After two years on the 'egg production' line, all the birds were then sold 'en masse' to the local Asians who treated them like pieces of rag. They used to break their wings and legs to speed up the loading and to cram more into the transport cages.
The average chicken lives for about ten to twelve years. Battery hens get two years hard labour before they become soup and chicken and chips.
Free range chicken fair slightly better. They get out (by law) for ......a whole hour a day!!
What a life!!....and no! I don't eat chicken!!

why would I stop eating them? If they are properly cooked, then most of the bacteria and other nasty organizms are killed, so there is no harm in eating them-
I also eat beef, pork, and fish, and where I live, we are advised to only eat fresh caught freshwater fish once a week, with once a month being better (PCB's in the lakes). So why would avian flu keep me from eating poultry-your question is very open ended, and very interesting. So no, I would not stop eating poultry, beef, pork or fish-if I had to stop and question every thing that I have or will eat, then I would literally stop eating, with drinking coming in a close second-ever wonder what is truly in the water you drink?

My country is poor and we eat cows when there is a mad cow disease on in the world and we eat chicken when there was bird flu running on high in our country, poor people need something to eat and during a bird flu the price of chicken goes down as rich people avoid it

Chicken - yes, so long as it's organic, free range and I know where it comes from.
Turkey - haven't had turkey for years.
I don't allow factory or intensely farmed animals or birds anywhere near my kitchen.

Of course.
For once the furking government haven't got involved so the voice is purely science. It's safe unless you actually handle a live infected bird.
Get real 150 people world wide.
More people get killed in cars every hour! Let's ban cars!!

I eat mostly white meat and to be honest if you thought to much about where a lot of your food comes from you, you would not eat anything.....
Do you work on the spit roast bit then?

I wonder which third world country markets are going to be graced with the 'bootiful' turkeys that are being culled at the moment.

The government tell us that it is still safe to handle/eat these birds. However, this is the same government which told us that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq! In other words they cannot be trusted.
Personally, I will be buying Quorn chicken/turkey products from now on. People have told me that they taste identical to their real meat alternatives but without the risk of dying.
