Seeds can be blown by the wind and land on the soil and then start growing.

Some seeds are in the soil for years before they germinate.

Some roots may grow underground from neighboring property and start new plants.


You might consider putting down sod when you are ready. Thick sod often prevents weeds from going through.

Plants usually spread through seed being dispersed on the wind or by "runners", that is roots in the soil which grow and then send up new green growth to form new plants. This can sometimes happen with just pieces of root that have been left in the soil.
