Maybe some smooth R&B. It's not as slow as classical or jazz. It's also not as "hard" as rock or rap.

yeah i had the same problem
no music.... too boring
music too loud....far too distracting
i would say go for soft melodical rock
this was my playlist:HIM- dark Light,
MUSE-endlessly, overdue,sing for absolution, apocalipse please,invicible,
Greenday- Good riddence (time of your life), are we the waiting, give me novicane,
The Strokes-heart in a cage, ask me anything,
Coldplay- in my place, the scienist, what if, trouble, yellow,
Snowpatrol- you could be happy,
Feeder -save us
this was my playlist it helped me through my exams and it is relaxing but not too relaxing if you know what i mean, lol, good luck!

what about more mellow music like deathcab and coldplay? if that's too mellow for you, then there's a bunch of classical songs remixed to be more upbeat. like pachabel canon, etc.

No. Lyrics. or nothing.
Get enough sleep - no partying when you need to study -
You need background music to stay awake is what you are doing.
Sleep, study, then, and only then, party.
