A gateway is the bridge between your 'internal' local area network and the internet. Typically it is a router, which assigns PCs hooked up to it an internal internet address (typically 192.168.1.xxx or start with 10. or 169. as those are all assigned to be internal LAN id's). The gateway is the internal internet protocol (IP) address that your PCs then recognize as the 'gateway' to the rest of the internet.
